Why are you interested in becoming a GSC officer/representative?
I’m interested in making a difference for Gallaudet’s staff. I’ve been serving as Chair of Marketing for three years and I feel I’m ready to take the next step and become a representative.
I feel I can represent EDI’s best interests in my role as a representative; I’ve gotten close to several colleagues and I feel I have a good rapport with them and would be able to get honest answers to concerns.
What skills and strategies do you possess that are specific to carrying out duties for this position?
I’m a solid communicator; I will take GSC concerns back to my colleagues for feedback and bring that feedback to GSC. I’ve also got strong interpersonal skills and am very flexible. I am very open-minded and try to see issues from all possible angles; I believe that helps with strategic thinking and planning.
As Chair of Marketing, I’d like to continue in that role. I believe, with the help of my committee, I’ve become more successful in that role. That committee is one I enjoy a great deal. I would love to experience other committees, as well, to expand my skillset.
What are your ideas and goals for the next year if elected as GSC officer/representative?
One obvious goal would be to represent the interests of my colleagues in EDI. We are a small, slowly growing division, but we represent the diversity you see on campus. To that end, we may have insight that could prove to be valuable to GSC and to Gallaudet.
Another goal will easily be met; being more involved with the political process here at Gallaudet. The opportunity to be more included in university decision making, or influencing decisions is appealing. I hope to enhance my leadership skills in doing this work.
I want to be part of a change. I see Gallaudet is trying to transform, for the better – I find that exciting, yet scary. I want to represent EDI’s interests in that change.
In what ways can you achieve the GSC mission?
The mission statement touches on many things that I already do for a living. Engagement, collaboration, sharing perspectives and working to give staff the level of respect they deserve. Not only would we be influencing decisions made by the university, we’d also be working to improve transparency to our staff.
Anything you would like to add? (hobbies, favorite book, etc)
