Amazon Web Services visits Gallaudet
Teresa Carlson, vice president of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Worldwide Public Sector, and two other AWS officials visited Gallaudet on June 21. They toured the Maguire Welcome Center, had lunch at House One, and met with President Cordano, Provost Carol Erting, Provost’s Office Chief of Staff Lillian Bishop Holt, and Associate Provost Tommy Horejes. This meeting was arranged by James F. X. Payne, a member of our Board of Trustees. Payne and one of his Dun & Bradstreet Corporation colleagues also attended the meeting. We hope that these new connections will lead to new opportunities for Gallaudet students and alumni and the deaf/signing ecosystem.
Trustee Wilma Newhoudt-Druchen rejoins South African Parliament
The Honorable Wilma Newhoudt-Druchen, ’92, G-’05, & H-’09, has been appointed to her fifth term as a member of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa. A member of the African National Congress (ANC) party, Newhoudt-Druchen was sworn in on June 18. She also has been a member of the Gallaudet University Board of Trustees since 2014, and serves on four Board committees: Academic Affairs; Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; National Deaf Education; and Student Affairs. Congratulations!
Our student athletes shine once again!
At NCAA Division III schools like Gallaudet, academics goes hand-in-hand with athletics. This past year, 51 Gallaudet students were named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Scholar-Athlete list. Each attained a 3.4 or better grade point average this past school year. Gallaudet’s women’s sports had 27 honorees, and men’s sports had 24 honorees. All 11 of our NEAC teams were represented. Our football team plays in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC), which recognized one player for his academic performance. Congratulations to our student athletes, and to the athletics program for fostering a culture of excellence!
Remembering long-time faculty member Rudolph C. Hines
We are sad to report that Rudolph C. Hines, ’47, passed away on June 21. He was 95 years old. Rudy taught mathematics at Gallaudet for 40 years, from 1953 to 1993. He was chair of the mathematics department at our former Northwest Campus. A Maryland native, Rudy served for 36 years on the Maryland School for the Deaf Board of Visitors, and was a founding member of the Maryland Association of the Deaf. He was past treasurer of the Gallaudet University Alumni Association. Mr. Hines lived for the last 13 years in North Oaks, Minnesota, near Saint Paul. President Cordano had the opportunity to meet him, and recognizes his contributions to the Gallaudet community. We extend our gratitude to Rudy for his dedicated service, and send our condolences to his family, including his wife Marlene, his two daughters, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Daily Digest changes
University Communications is working on enhanced communication channels for the community. In order for us to bring you better communications, we need to make adjustments and determine where our efforts will have the greatest impact. In particular, the Daily Digest will appear on Mondays and Wednesdays from now on, and will be renamed shortly. Never fear: You may go to my.gallaudet.edu at any time to see current and archived announcements and calendar listings. Also, Gallaudet Technology Services has made it possible to subscribe to immediate or daily notifications of new postings. For more information, see the GTS announcement.
No Hi5 next week
