The Division of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is working to build a stronger, safer and more inclusive community. Many students at Gallaudet have experienced trauma in the form of racism, homophobia, audism and many other forms of oppression. For us to effectively dismantle systemic oppression, we must start with ourselves and we must, as a community begin the process of healing, together. HOW?? We start by listening. Being heard is incredibly freeing. Want to be heard? That is why we created the Bison Circles!
What is a Bison Circle and why do we need them? Bison Circles are part of our restorative practices -- we are working to create a space where community members can come together and begin the process of healing together. It's an opportunity for students to listen and be heard -- and to connect, build relationships. In person, or on Zoom. We are forming affinity groups this semester, by race, as well as open, mixed groups. We will have the following groups:
• Black
• Indigenous
• Asian
• Latina/o/x and Hispanic
• White
• LGBTQ+
• Open to all — all races welcome
The purpose is to build connections and support from people like you and ALSO work to build connections and relationships with people different from yourself.
Our kick off for the Spring will be on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 7:00 p.m., on Zoom! Come learn more about how these circles can benefit you. We will explain about the affinity groups and what we are trying to achieve — then we will dive in and start talking!
