Dear campus community,
Throughout the month of May, Gallaudet will recognize the history and achievements of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) and the significant contributions they have made, individually and collectively, to the political, economic, technological, scientific, artistic, and social fabric of this country. The vast diversity of cultures, languages, religions, and people across these demographics provides our community with an enriching experience filled with wonder and appreciation.
The AANHPI community on campus plays a key role in making our environment culturally diverse and vibrant. DEDI continues to be committed to supporting the AANHPI community through allyship and fostering a stronger sense of belonging and inclusion at Gallaudet.
DEDI’s Lecture Series for May features Mr. Vijay Advani, ’93, who will be presenting “Do You Understand what a Desi means?” He will explain Desi life in India and his personal experiences growing up. He will also talk about his family - his wife Veena, ’96, and his three CODA children. This event is slated for Thursday, May 26, 2022, from 4-5:30 p.m. on Zoom. Mr. Advani is an ASL Instructor for Staff, under the Office of the Chief Bilingual Officer (CBO). He grew up in India and migrated to the United States 41 years ago in pursuit of an education. Mr. Advani received his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Gallaudet in 1993. He then earned his Masters in Deaf Education from McDaniel College in 1994. For the past 30 years, he has been an educator from preschool to college/university level and also served as an advocate all over the country. He has presented globally on Deaf perspectives.
We appreciate and thank the AANHPI community for all they have contributed to Gallaudet University and to the Deaf community as a whole. Please join us as we celebrate and enjoy Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
