Earl Parks is introducing Julie A. Hochgesang to discuss her topic:
GUDAing it: Or what I’ve learned about using tech resources available through Gallaudet to share ASL videos FAIRly and with CARESince I’ve been at Gallaudet from 2005, I’ve been interested in ASL videos as data to use for my work as a linguist and as a way of documenting knowledge of our signing communities. Over the years, I’ve learned how to use Gallaudet technical resources to collect, process, store and share these videos. I’ll share some of my current storing and sharing strategies (what I call Gallaudet University Documentation of ASL - GUDA) through showcasing two datasets I’m preparing for public sharing. These datasets - called O5S5 ASL and MoLo ASL for short - are public and I hope they will be accessed by the Gallaudet community.. As I do all of this work, I think about how to maintain information responsibly using the resources we have at hand (Google Workspace, Microsoft OneDrive, Zoom, YouTube, Kaltura), data sharing guidelines like FAIR and CARE, and considering what signed language communities value. Like I tell my students, if you take care of your data, your data will take care of you. With reflection and care, you can have a beautiful relationship with your data.
