You just saw that I’m wearing a mask. Why? Because out here in the real world, there’s a serious and dangerous pandemic. I wear the mask to protect myself and others. Now, what about the online world in the virtual space? How can I protect myself there?
GTS will be releasing video clips to the Gallaudet community. The goal of these video clips is to increase your awareness of cybersecurity. I invited three students from the IT program at Gallaudet to tell you about several cybersecurity threats and advise on what you can do to protect yourself on the Internet.
Now, let’s see what they have to share with you.

Maybe you have noticed lately that people are taking steps to increase security? You may be wondering if you should do the same? I suggest that yes, you should. One example of improving security is Two-Step Verification, also known as 2SV.
What is it, and what are the benefits? If you log into your email using your username and password, that’s the first step. The second step increases security. After you enter your username and password, a message will be sent to your phone, such as a special code typically 6 to 8 digits long. After you enter the code, you can get into your email account. That process takes two steps to complete.
Why do these two steps help protect you from hackers? If a hacker figures out your username and password and tries to log in, 2SV will prevent them from getting into your account because they still need your phone to get the code to complete the second step. Your account will be safe from hackers. Installing 2SV is one way to increase security on your account.
