Activist and writer Emi Koyama presents, "The Uses of Negativity: Survival and Coping Strategies for Those of Us Who Are Exasperated by the Empty Promise of 'IT' Getting 'Better,'" which asserts the idea of negative survivorship--validating and embracing survival and coping strategies that are sometimes considered "unhealthy" or "self-defeating," as an alternative to the tyranny of compulsory positivity and optimism that permeate self-help and support literature, including Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" campaign--a self-congratulatory project by and for middle-aged gays and lesbians that does little for young people who face multiple oppressions and difficulties.
